|One-Minute Bible Study|
I. The Diagnosis: Anxiety
Have you ever taken a test when you would break out in a cold sweat, your mind would go blank, and you would forget everything you had studied?
Have you ever thought, “What if nobody will hire me?”
Have you ever had this inner feeling of apprehension, uneasiness, concern, worry, or dread?
Have you ever experienced stomach discomfort, shortness of breath, inability to sleep, increased fatigue, and loss of appetite at the same time?
Have you ever become immobilized by excessive worry?
Welcome to the world of anxiety.
Anxiety comes when we turn from God, shift the burdens of life onto ourselves and assume that we alone are responsible for handling problems.
II. The Antidote: God's Peace
To the Greeks it was the absence of war
To the Hebrews it was wholeness, prosperity, a good life within the community
To the Christians it is captured in the hymn, When Peace Like A River
To one gospel writer it’s like having a heavy weight lifted—Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest [peace]—Matthew 11:28
To another gospel writer it’s like something out of this world—Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you—John 14:27.
To the writer of the Philippians it is God’s promise to guard your hearts and minds—that is, to mount guard as a sentinel, to post spies at the gates, to hem in and protect, to keep with a garrison—Philippians 4:7
In essence God has posted watch at the gates of our hearts and minds protecting them by means of His peace
III. The Prognosis: Total Peace Of Mind
Have you ever sensed the peace of God protecting you whenever the threat level is raised?
Have you ever experienced the peace of God guarding your heart and mind when the doctor finds an alarming sign under the X-ray?
Have you ever felt the peace of God acting like spies, warning you against falling prey to doom and gloom when the stock market is going in the wrong direction?
Have you ever felt the weight of despair, depression, helplessness, and hopelessness lifted when turning to God in prayer?
Welcome to the world of peace.
