God Will Keep Us Safe
Dear MBC Church Family,
Good news from the center of a storm. Coming out of Mississippi is the news that the trend among African Americans there is being reversed. Early in the pandemic, as was the trend nationally, blacks were disproportionately represented among COVID-19 cases and deaths. However, that is no longer the case in Mississippi. Blacks make up roughly 38% of the population in the state, yet had accounted for about 60% of the cases and death. Now those numbers are in line with the number of blacks in the population.
The reason for this trend is in a very real sense quite encouraging. The number of cases is surging among whites, but not among blacks. It appears that blacks in Mississippi are taking very seriously the warnings from health officials to wear masks, socially distance from others and limit the size of indoor gatherings. So, despite experiencing the worst of healthcare disparities and poverty rates, black Mississippians have been able to protect themselves by adhering to those straightforward guidelines. The story of their lives tells us that in the face of huge structural disadvantages and in the face of a seemingly uncontrollable rise in the number of virus cases, as we do our part to protect ourselves and others, God will keep us safe.
