Our Confidence Is In The Lord

Dear MBC Church Family,

“Low-grade depression” is how Michelle Obama described her feelings while facing simultaneously a lengthy quarantine, daily news about racial injustices, and the exasperating course of action and inaction taken by the current administration.  The continuous flow of troubling news that bombarded her caused her to have many sleepless nights.  However, Michelle is actually coping fairly well along with her husband and daughters, and she is staying on a regular routine of exercises and family mealtimes to keep up her spirits.  But occasionally she’ll find that she has to take a break away from social media and other sources of so much sadness so the news won’t overwhelm her.

Others, though, may find themselves not coping as well and they may end up suffering, not from low-grade, but from high-octane depression.  The steady flow of bad news, not just from the media, but from family and friends can become overwhelming and lead to a sense of helplessness and hopelessness.  However, as children of God, the confidence that we have is that our Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. To paraphrase Psalm 61:2-4, “When I’m down to my last gasp, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For I long to take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” The psalmist knew that “when the enemy shall come in like a flood” (Isaiah 59:19), we, too, can break away from the source of trouble and run to the Rock, our Lord Most High, for comfort and protection.

A much needed reminder to us when conditions feel overwhelming is Psalm 46:1-2 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” Amen.
